Quest Submitted By: The Crown

Quest Text

A crystal-like monster has appeared upon Fool's Crest and is guarding some strange rippling portal. No other monster nor Feather has been able to get close enough to inspect the portal. Elimination Required. Sealing the portal Required.

Hunters

  • Zarnos, Gold 2 (LvL 10)

  • Verbranden Foundre, Gold 1 (LvL 9)

  • Swif Tee Ness, Copper 1 (LvL 1)

Excellent work, literally no notes. Unfortunately notes are mandatory so I have still have to write up this dumb report. Zarnos and Verbranden not only completed the hunt, but they also helped induct a new ̶g̶u̶i̶l̶d̶e̶e̶ guild member at the same time. Not including the Crown's requirement of some "portal specialist" to help seal the rift.

While the body of the aberration was not retrieved I personally don't see that as a mark against the hunters. The alien nature of those monsters makes learning something new is very unlikely and I highly doubt this creature is the one that made the rift. Honestly I think polymorphing the thing and throwing it back where it came from is poetic justice.

I also just received a report from the Feathers stating the increase in aberration activity has stopped risings and is actively decreasing. So it looks like Korlic's theory about the portal being the reason for the increase is correct. Good for them. Though that still doesn't explain WHY one got torn open up on Fool's Crest. I smell a field trip!

Thoughts from the Game Master

Really proud of my players for completely neutralizing a fight before there was a chance for anything to happen xD. Well that's not completely true as the monster did get a few shots off which made it clear they made the right choice in polymorphing it. This is the second or third time a problem (not necessarily a hunt) was solved with that spell. In any normal campaign I would be concerned it could "ruin the fun".

With the Adventure Point game though I am not too concerned. The whole premise is based around the players preparing the best the can to hunt monsters they don't know anything about. Eventually their cheesy strat isn't going to be enough and they will forced to be evolved. That or them ending up on a hunt with multiple monsters.

I used the Mindshard stat block from Kobold Press' Tome of Beasts 3 as the starting point for this monster.
